Neuromodulation can include electrical stimulation therapies intended to reduce the pain experience. The Gate Control theory (Wall & Melzack, 1965) proposed that stimulation of large diameter A-fibers results in ‘masking’ the pain sensation. In this instance, paraesthesia is induced and the patient feels tingling rather than the original pain sensation.
